March 2009

On Thursday 12th February 2009, twenty four children from Hollywell Primary School, Kimberley took part in a rowing event organised by The Kimberley School.  Teachers and young leaders from The Kimberley School arranged and supervised the event in which the Hollywell children were divided into six teams who then competed against one another in a series of different rowing competitions devised by Mr Rob Yates who oversaw the event. All the children enjoyed both the rowing and the competitive element of the event and at the end of the exhausting session agreed that it had been incredibly good exercise and a lot of fun.

Each year the Eastwood and District Primary Schools Sports Association, which comprises 17 primary schools, holds a Swimming Gala at the Kimberley Leisure Centre swimming pool.  This year the Swimming Gala was held on Tuesday 3rd February and Hollywell assembled a team of talented and enthusiastic children who this year hoped to win the coveted Shirley Naylor Swimming Trophy.

Throughout the Gala the Hollywell children performed well picking up six First Places, four Second Places and four Third Places. The Cannon Relay Team of six children, three girls and three boys, raced over six lengths of the pool against four other schools and competed really well to finish in second place. Despite gaining a high number of points throughout the Gala, the Hollywell Team finished very proud Runners Up.

Historcally, Albany had a separate nursary building with lots of outdoor space.  This leant itself to super Physical Development opportunities for its children.

Last year they moved all of Foundation Stage One children into the main school building to form an Early Years Foundation Stage Unit.  This really benefited the Early Years curriculum as well as transition and planning opportunities.

However, Albany Infants was concerned that the outdoor spaces were not as good as they were and so wanted to create a practical large outdoor area where the children could experience physical development activities more easily.  They also wanted an area where the children were able to access outdoor learning more freely.

After researching various funding available to put towards costs, the Infant School was able to go ahead with plans to extend the playground area and design what the new facility would look like.

The softpour surface area is now complete and is fenced, and they are installing climbing frames and other outdoor equipment soon.

Already, the EYFS children are making good use of the area and it will be even better once the equipment is installed!  Staff are delighted with this new outdoor facility!

Bramcote Park Business and Enterprise School has launched a massive program of intra form competitive opportunities for Years 7 to 11.  The program aims to increase pupil participation to match the Partnership's average last year of 49%.  The entire concept was developed by Year 10 JSLA pupils.  The group are responisble for advertising, team sheets, fixtures, leagues and results sheets, liasing with form sports captains and ultimately refereeing the competitions and scoring!  All in all, they are responsible for the entire process!

Those Leaders who show strong leadership and communication skills have excelled in the refereeing element of the competitions but there has been no shortage of organisational jobs for those less confident leaders.  So far Year 7 forms have been competing in Dodgeball and Badminton at lunch and we have seen 50% of pupils from all 7 forms turn up to get a slice of the action.  If this trend continues Park should see 50% of all pupils participating in intra form competition for the year 2008/09.  Last years percentage was 29%!

20 Bramcote Park girls where given the fantastic opportunity to use the Junior Gym at Bramcote Leisure Centre this Spring for absolutely free!!  As part of the already hugely successful ‘Go Girl’ initiative the girls were given 10 weeks use of the facility after school along with a free induction and the chance to have a personalised training program to work to!  The aim was to encourage the girls to participate in physical activity in their own time after the 10 weeks was up.  Bramcote Park SSCo commented, “I chose girls that would really benefit from this programme, girls who did not  do much out of school already.  I have seen a positive effect on their attitude around school”.  One of the yr 11 girls stated, “I thoroughly enjoyed my 10 weeks and definitely plan to continue to use the gym in the future.  It has given me the incentive to keep my weight down!”.

On Friday  10th October all Year 6 pupils from the recently merged Frederick Harrison Infants and Stevenson Juniors, took part in Playground Buddy Training. Following the training the pupils have devised a 3 week rota for taking it in turns to organise playground games for the main school children at playtimes and the lower school children at lunchtimes. Two Year 6 pupils are responsible for a different game each day. Our Playground Buddies are good at explaining the games to the younger children and encouraging them to join in. The younger children enjoy playing these physical activities and are therefore experiencing happier and healthier playtimes!!
